At a time when Merlot was treated purely as a blending grape, Dan Duckhorn saw its untapped potential. In 1978, the winery produced its inaugural vintage: 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot. Against standard advice to blend them together, Dan and Margaret made the bold decision to bottle the Merlot on its own.
That choice transformed North American Merlot into a premier standalone varietal, anchored by renowned sites such as the legendary Three Palms Vineyard.
