Szepsy are universally recognised as Tokaj and Hungary’s leading winemakers, renowned for their highly sought-after, terroir driven, dry furmint and sweet Aszú wines.

The Szepsy family have been producing Tokaj wines since the 1500s with an uncompromising focus on quality. Their family history is deeply linked to that of Tokaj Aszú wine production, and in 1631, Szepsy Laczko Mate was the first person to document the production of Tokaji Aszú. Today, under the direction of István Szepsy (the eighteenth generation) and his son István Jr., the same standards remain, continuing the family tradition of striving towards perfection.

The estate comprises of 52 hectares planted with vines that are 40 years of age on average, including 6 Grand Cru and 6 Premier Cru vineyards, situated on steep slopes, at high altitude and on rocky, volcanic soils. As with all great winemakers Szepsy’s philosophy is all about preserving the quality of fruit and not about sleight of hand in the winery. All grapes are hand harvested and fermentation and maturation takes place in wood. With such a focus on quality, yields are often ridiculously low.

In 2022, Szepsy’s excellence was recognised at the Golden Vines (the Oscars of the wine world) when they were named Best Fine Wine Producer in Europe, and Istvàn Szepsy was recognised with the Macallan Golden Vines Hall of Fame award.
