Boroli: Crafting Exceptional Barolo with Tradition and Innovation

Written by

In the heart of Italy’s revered Piedmont region, Boroli is a testament to passion, heritage, and innovation in winemaking. Founded by a Piedmontese family of entrepreneurs in the 1990s, Boroli embodies the vision of turning a profound love for wine into a legacy. Today, the estate is managed by Achille Boroli, the second generation in the family. He has taken on the mantle of his family’s dream to create exquisite Barolo wines that reflect the region’s terroir and tradition.

Roots in Piedmont’s Heartland

Piedmont is famed for its Barolo, the “king of wines,” Boroli’s vineyards span the historic Barolo zones of Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, and La Morra. These ten hectares of vineyards are ideally located in terms of soil and climate but are also meticulously tended with a commitment to showcasing each plot’s unique terroir. Boroli’s philosophy is simple yet powerful: “A great wine is the result of a great vineyard and a great terroir.” This belief is the guiding force behind the estate’s approach to viticulture and winemaking, where every step aims to produce wines that authentically represent Piedmont’s renowned terroir.

A Unique Approach to Viticulture

The vineyards at Boroli are cultivated with an emphasis on quality and sustainability. The planting density in each vineyard is kept between 4,500 and 4,800 vine stocks per hectare, optimising the balance between vine health and fruit concentration. Organic fertilisation is applied selectively every three years, ensuring soil vitality is maintained without excessive intervention. Boroli’s team practices green harvesting and turfing, allowing natural ground cover to grow between vines, promoting healthy soil structure and preventing erosion. These practices reflect Boroli’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, enhancing both the quality of their wines and the longevity of their vineyards.

State-of-the-Art Winemaking at Cascina La Brunella

At Boroli, tradition meets modernity in their state-of-the-art winery, Cascina La Brunella. This facility was designed to preserve the integrity of the grapes while allowing for meticulous craftsmanship throughout the winemaking process. Grapes are carefully destemmed and gently pressed by gravity, minimising handling and preserving the purity of flavour. Fermentation and ageing take place precisely; wines are aged for 8 to 14 months in small French barriques, then decanted into tonneaux and small barrels to develop their unique profiles. Blending and bottling are carried out with utmost care to ensure that each bottle reflects the vision and standards of the Boroli family.

The result is a range of expressive and balanced wines, each embodying the essence of the Barolo region. Boroli’s Barolos are known for their depth, elegance, and ability to age gracefully, making them highly sought-after by connoisseurs and collectors alike.

Brunella – The Monopole Cru

The jewel of Boroli’s vineyards is undoubtedly Brunella, a Monopole Cru surrounding their Cascina La Brunella winery. As Boroli’s flagship vineyard, Brunella produces a remarkable Barolo that embodies the character and quality of the estate. The Brunella Barolo is renowned for its intense structure, refined tannins, and exceptional ageing potential, making it a standout within Boroli’s portfolio. This wine is a true reflection of the unique terroir surrounding the winery, capturing the full essence of Boroli’s dedication to producing Barolo of remarkable quality.

Culinary Excellence with Madonna di Como

In addition to their dedication to winemaking, the Boroli family brings their passion for quality and tradition into the culinary world. They own and operate Laconda del Pilone, a one-Michelin-star restaurant in Alba. The restaurant is celebrated for its refined take on traditional Piedmontese cuisine, harmonising beautifully with Boroli wines. Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the world of Boroli, experiencing the region’s flavours in both food and wine.

Embracing a Legacy and Looking to the Future

Under Achille Boroli’s guidance, the estate continues to blend tradition with innovation. By honouring the land and continuously refining their craft, Boroli has carved out a distinctive place in the competitive world of Italian wine. For those who appreciate wines with a sense of place, Boroli’s offerings provide a window into the heart of Barolo, crafted with passion, respect for heritage, and a vision for the future.
