Tenuta di Sesta: Masters of Southern Montalcino

Written by

Heritage in the heart of Montalcino

On the southern slopes of Montalcino, between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Tenuta di Sesta stands as a benchmark for authenticity. The Ciacci family has been cultivating this hillside since the mid-19th century. Their wines capture the essence of Sangiovese at its best – refined, expressive and generous.

A founding family of Brunello di Montalcino

When Brunello di Montalcino received its official DOC recognition in 1966, Giuseppe Ciacci bottled the estate’s first Brunello — one of only twelve producers at the time, placing Tenuta di Sesta among the appellation’s founding families. Today, Giovanni Ciacci, together with his children Andrea and Francesca, continues to guide the estate, refining viticulture and winemaking with precision and quiet confidence.

Where the vineyard does the talking

The estate’s vineyards descend from 400 to 200 metres, set on limestone- and clay-rich soils that lend depth and mineral drive. This southern exposure imparts warmth and ripeness, while elevation and cooling breezes preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Long regarded as one of the most privileged zones of Montalcino, this site yields Sangiovese with natural harmony—fruit of depth and purity, shaped by balance rather than power.

Tradition and precision in the cellar

In the cellar, patience and restraint define the house style. Sangiovese matures in large Slavonian oak, preserving its perfume, texture, and line without the imprint of new wood. The Brunello Riserva typically ages around forty months in 30–35hl botti before extended bottle refinement, achieving seamless structure and savoury complexity. The Rosso di Montalcino, given a shorter élevage in large cask, offers a more immediate glimpse of the estate’s classical style—elegant, expressive, and unmistakably Tenuta di Sesta.

The wines to know

Camponovo, Toscana Rosso IGT
A young and vivid introduction to the estate, blending Sangiovese with a small portion of Colorino. Expect red-cherry brightness, gentle spice and silky tannins. Vinified and rested in stainless steel for purity, it is designed for effortless drinking and broad food pairing.

Rosso di Montalcino
All Sangiovese from estate vineyards, this Rosso marries red-fruit lift with a fine, peppery edge. A short ageing in large Slavonian oak rounds the tannins and brings a supple, balanced finish. It is the perfect snapshot of Tenuta di Sesta’s style when you want Brunello character in a more forward frame.

Brunello di Montalcino
The estate’s flagship Brunello is firmly classical: fragrant, savoury and layered, with the breadth you expect from the south of the commune and the freshness that marks the site. Ageing in large cask underscores Sangiovese’s floral and mineral tones rather than oak sweetness.

Brunello di Montalcino Riserva “Duelecci”
A single-vineyard selection bottled either as Duelecci Est or Duelecci Ovest depending on the season. The east side’s stonier soils suit cooler summers, while the richer west side excels in warmer years, a candid expression of vintage and micro-terroir. Expect depth, refined tannins and a long, composed finish.

Why list Tenuta di Sesta

  • Authenticity from a founding producer. One of Brunello’s original bottlers, the estate offers a direct line to the appellation’s roots.
  • Site first, oak second. Ageing in large Slavonian casks keeps Sangiovese’s perfume and structure front and centre across Rosso, Brunello and Riserva.
  • Clarity across the range. From the stainless-raised Camponovo to the nuanced Duelecci Riserva, there is a clear, classical house style with excellent value at each step.
  • Consistent quality from a prized zone. Southern Montalcino warmth is balanced by elevation and limestone-rich soils, giving wines that are ripe yet composed.

Tenuta di Sesta offers what many seek in Montalcino today: the depth and savoury charm of traditional Brunello, the transparency of sensitive farming and the kind of vineyard detail that rewards time in the glass or the cellar. For lists that value provenance, personality and continuity, these are wines that make a compelling case.
